Piece of ice!

As the weather gets warmer, some parents bring popsicles at pickup. Their children hand them out to the first few lucky kids and the others are literally left in the dust!‎ The other day, Hans got the last popsicle. I didn't see it as I was engaged in a conversation with another parent. Later on, one of the parents remarked that Hans gave it to this kid who is 2 years younger than him. She felt that Hans was very kind and generous. However, I was a little suspicious of such unusual behaviour. Hans loves popsicles. I couldn't help it and asked Hans about it. He just shrugged his shoulders and said, "It is just a piece of ice!" I reminded him that he loves that piece of ice. He shrugged again and said something like, "I can always go out and buy some more...I actually have better popsicles at home! Can we go home now?!"

Hans was only generous as he knew he had better popsicles at home. If we didn't have them at home, that piece of ice would have been a treasure and I doubt he would have parted with it so easily.

My lesson for the day: If someone praises my child, I must bask in that glorious moment. I must not question it, but just accept it. It should be a piece of cake and not a piece of ice!
